How to spend upgrade points without regret

How to spend upgrade points without regret

Skill trees are exciting and also a trap. It's tempting to grab the shiniest ability first, but that flashy skill is often a dead end that leaves you underpowered for the middle of the game.

My rule is to build the spine before the flourishes. Spend your first points on the things you use every single fight, usually basic damage, survivability, or resource generation. Those unglamorous nodes carry you further than any special move.

In Emberpath Saga I made the classic mistake of pouring points into a big attack skill early, then struggling because my healer couldn't keep the party alive. A rebuild fixed it, but many games don't let you respec freely, so plan ahead.

When in doubt, ask what the game keeps throwing at you. If every fight is a damage race, invest in damage. If you keep dying, invest in defence. Let the game's own pressure guide your spending.
