Emberpath Saga
Emberpath Saga is a proper role-playing game that respects a small screen. Combat is turn-based and readable, party members each have a distinct role, and the writing is warmer than most mobile RPGs bother with. You play a healer, which is a nice twist since your job is keeping the group alive rather than dealing the biggest hit.
Exploration is broken into manageable chunks, so you can clear a region on a bus ride and pick up the thread later without feeling lost. The skill system rewards experimenting, and we ended up rebuilding our whole party halfway through after finding a combo that just worked.
It's not perfect, the map can feel a little linear late on, but the character moments carried us through. We cared how the story ended, and that's rare for a game you play in your pocket.
